Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property close to the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the site and another man who fled subsequent to the blast was apprehended shortly later. All three have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location displayed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the explosion had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the blast, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
